Decision 2012: a picture is worth a thousand words (Part 1: Baton Rouge)
Now that the election has officially concluded with the inauguration of President Obama, we would like to show graphically how various regions of Louisiana voted for President in the 2004, 2008, and 2012 elections. This posting is devoted to Baton Rouge. While the Baton Rouge area leans Republican, there is a substantial black population within the borders of East Baton Rouge Parish. You also have a small but growing population of more liberally minded professionals and academics who live near LSU off Perkins/Highland Roads or just to the east of downtown. Because of these two factors, East Baton Rouge Parish has become steadily more Democratic: after voting 54% for George W Bush in 2004, Barack Obama carried the parish both times he has been on the ballot. In 2008, he received 50% of East Baton Rouge Parish’s votes, while in 2012, his share of the vote increased to 52%.
(Note: the color coding for all maps is the percent of the vote the Republican Presidential nominee received in each election. Also, the “black lines” are the current state House districts)
