The 2nd Congressional district of Oklahoma is the one Congressional district in the state that is more “southern” than “western.” For years, this orientation led to a solidly Democratic constituency even in top of the ballot races. That has changed, although Democrats still are formidable at the Congressional and local level.
Recently, 8 year Democratic incumbent Dan Boren decided not to seek re-election, and both Democrats and Republicans are holding competitive primaries (and runoffs) to replace him. In the Republican primary, plumbing contractor Markwayne Mullin and state representative/cleaning contractor George Faught made the runoff, although Mullin led 42-23%. We have recently conducted a poll on the runoff race, and Mullin has a healthy lead heading into the August 28 runoff.
