The 5th Congressional District is located in Northeast Louisiana, although after reapportionment, additional territory in the Florida Parishes and in St Landry Parish was added. This is a Republican leaning district with a noticeable Democratic base, due to the 33% black voter registration. Mitt Romney carried this district 61-38%, while in the 2008 Senate race, Senator Mary Landrieu received 48% of the vote (her Republican challenger John Kennedy got 50%). Below is a graphical depiction of the district:
As a result of Congressman Rodney Alexander’s recent resignation, there will be a special election, with an October 19 primary and (if necessary) a November 16 runoff. Since qualifying starts tomorrow, JMC Analytics and Polling thought it would conduct a poll to gauge voter sentiment on the eve of qualifying. Attached is the poll.
