Decision 2015: JMCEL’s “bite sized politics” (House District 95)

INCUMBENT: Sherman Mack (Republican)

DESCRIPTION: House District 95 is located in Livingston Parish and roughly includes territory east of Denham Springs and north of I-12, although the growing suburb of Walker is not in the district. This is a district that is in transition, as suburbanization has begun to spread into this district which still is largely small town and rural.

RED/BLUE RATING (using 2008, 2012, and 2014 elections): 81% Republican

JMCEL’s SUMMARY: House District 95 has a limited political history, as it was newly created after the 2011 reapportionment due to heavy growth along the I-12 corridor; before that, it was located in Uptown New Orleans. Politically, this is a heavily Republican district, due both to the Republican preferences of Baton Rouge suburbanites (who have come here due to the schools and a more rural atmosphere) and changing political attitudes of its formerly Democratic rural/small town residents. In the 2011 election, Republican attorney Sherman Mack won in the primary 61-32% over his Democratic opponent. Rep. Mack is allowed to serve two more terms, and a district that gave Romney 84% of the vote and Bill Cassidy 83% is not one where he will have re-election problems.
