INCUMBENT: Ed Price (Democrat)

DESCRIPTION: District 58 is located in the heart of petrochemical Louisiana and is also the home of many of the historic plantations that people associate with Louisiana. The district itself includes portions of three parishes: (1) portions of Iberville Parish including the towns of Carville and White Castle, (2) the west bank of Ascension Parish (which contains Donaldsonville), as well as parts of the east bank around Burnside and most of Gonzales, and (3) most of Saint James Parish except for the town of Grammercy. This was a district that was drawn in 1981 to be a black majority district.

RED/BLUE RATING (using 2008, 2012, and 2014 elections): 75% Democratic

JMCEL’s SUMMARY: House District 58 was drawn three decades ago to be a majority black district, and its 66% black voter registration, combined with some residual populist Democratic sentiment, keeps this a solidly Democratic district. This is also a district that in its history has elected four representatives (all black Democrats) in the past 32 years to represent the district. The last representative was elected in 2008, when term limits forced his predecessor (who served for 16 years) to retire. He left in 2011 in an unsuccessful run for a newly created state senate seat in the River Parish. He was succeeded by Ed Price, who defeated his opponent with 58% of the vote in the runoff. Rep. Price is allowed to serve two more terms, and shouldn’t have any re-election problems.
