Decision 2015: JMCEL’s “bite sized politics” (House District 89)
INCUMBENT: Tim Burns (Republican)
DESCRIPTION: House District 89 is located in Saint Tammany Parish and can simply be thought of as “the Mandeville district”: it includes Mandeville and surrounding neighborhoods along US Highway 190 that have seen much recent suburban development from New Orleans, as the terminus of the Pontchartrain Causeway is at the southern border of the district.
DISTRICT MAP:
RED/BLUE RATING (using 2008, 2012, and 2014 elections): 78% Republican
JMCEL’s SUMMARY: House District 89 has been one of the beneficiaries of continued strong suburban growth in Saint Tammany Parish, and has only been in existence for four election cycles (it was created after the 2001 reapportionment), so it has a limited political history. In fact, its only representative since the district was created has been Republican Tim Burns, who has generally had an easy time with elections. In his initial (2003) election, he was elected after his runoff opponent withdraw immediately after the primary. He was unopposed in 2007, and in 2011, he defeated a fellow Republican with 69% of the vote. This is one of the most affluent and heavily Republican districts in the entire state, so even though Rep. Burns is term limited, he almost certainly will be succeeded by another Republican in a district that gave Mitt Romney 80% of the vote and Bill Cassidy 77%.
