DESCRIPTION: House District 90 is located in Saint Tammany Parish and includes most of the Slidell west of I-10, as well as the town of Pearl River. This is a district that includes both high income neighborhoods along Lake Pontchartrain and more modest neighborhoods in Slidell along either side of US Highway 11.

RED/BLUE RATING (using 2008, 2012, and 2014 elections): 67% Republican

JMCEL’s SUMMARY: House District 90 is located in suburban Saint Tammany Parish and includes its originally settled suburb of Slidell. Despite some upper income neighborhoods in the Eden Isle development, the overall tone of the district is white middle class, although there has been some mild demogaphic changes in the neighborhoods in the older sections of Slidell, as a district that a decade ago had a 12% black voter registration is 16% black today. Despite these changes, this district has always been Republican suburbia, although former Senator Mary Landrieu has consistently performed better than a typical Democrat here: while Barack Obama received 27% of the district vote both times he was on the ballot, Landrieu received 38% in 2002, 43% in her 2008 race, and 34% last year. In legislative races, this district was first created after the 1991 reapportionment, and Democrats haven’t even attempted to compete here since 1991. And not only has this district only been represented by two Republicans since its creation, but this hasn’t been a strongly contested district in most elections. From 1992 until 2008 (thanks to term limits), the first representative here was Republican “Pete” Schneider, who was succeeded in 2008 by “Greg” Cromer, who was unopposed in his first run, and in his 2011 re-election, he defeated a fellow Republican with 75% of the vote. Rep. Cromer is allowed to serve one more term, and shouldn’t have re-election problems, given the district’s decided Republican preference.
