Decision 2015: JMCEL’s “bite sized politics” (House District 79)
INCUMBENT: Julie Stokes (Republican)
DESCRIPTION: House District 79 is located in Jefferson Parish along Lake Pontchartrain and contains the more affluent precincts in Metairie and Kenner north of Esplanade Avenue.
DISTRICT MAP:
RED/BLUE RATING (using 2008, 2012, and 2014 elections): 71% Republican
JMCEL’s SUMMARY: Ever since its creation in 1981, House District 79 has elected nothing but Republicans, and Democrats haven’t attempted to compete here in years, although it’s worth noticing that there has been a steady increase in the district’s Hispanic population – 17% of the residents and 7% of the voters are Hispanic. The current representative, Julie Stokes, was elected in a 2013 special election, and is eligible to serve two more terms. Given the district’s Republican preferences (although it’s no longer the most Republican district in the state), she should have little trouble getting re-elected.
