Decision 2015: JMCEL’s “bite sized politics” (House District 6)

INCUMBENT: Thomas Carmody (Republican)

DESCRIPTION: House District 6 is in northwest Louisiana and is located both in Caddo and Bossier Parishes. In Caddo Parish, it includes the more established, affluent neighborhoods of Shreveport east of I-49 roughly between Kings Highway and 70th Street. The district then crosses the river into Bossier Parish to include some neighborhoods along US Highway 71 near Barksdale Air Force Base.

RED/BLUE RATING (using 2008, 2012, and 2014 elections): 72% Republican

JMCEL’s SUMMARY: Until 1995, the Republican presence in the Legislature was too small to impact major legislation, although back then, there were a handful of more affluent districts in Shreveport, Baton Rouge, and New Orleans that were the epicenter of Republican activity. House District 6 was one of those few districts that first started voting for Republicans in state House races as far back as 1971, although it briefly flirted with the Democrats in the late 1980s/early 1990s. The current represenative is Thomas Carmody, who was elected in a special election in early 2008 (and, curiously, was elected over Barrow Peacock, who now represents the area in the state senate). Representative Carmody is allowed to serve one more term, and given the consistently strong Republican preference of the district’s voters, should have no problems with re-election.
